NEna KapOne

NEna KapOne - Draft

Nena Kapone is a Hip-Hop artist from Tacoma, WA. She was bitten by the Hip-Hop bug early in life and began rapping at the ripe age of 12. She was influenced heavily by 90’s Hip-Hop and the first track she ever rapped over was the instrumental to B.G.’s “Cash Money is
an Army”. Also around this same time the former radio-station KUBE 93.3, a Seattle/Tacoma Hip-Hop station, had an extremely popular freestyle session every night. Aspiring MC’s would
call into the radio-show and spit their best bars. If they did their thing, then they were invited to call in the next night. Eventually if the artist kept winning the battles then they would get some
sort of prize. Nena began calling in and winning the competitions. She finally won Key Arena tickets to see Master P, Ja Rule, Ashanti, Tweet, and others.

This was her introduction to the Pacific Northwest Hip-Hop scene.
In 2011 Kapone began to take her music seriously and she started a label and called it “Sumtin Different Entertainment”. Bear in mind she was now a young woman rapping and running her very own independent, underground Hip-Hop label. These were big moves to make in a male-dominated space such as Hip-Hop. She released her first official mixtape and titled it “Sumtin Different Entertainment Volume 1”.

However, as such is with life - Nena Kapone hit a major obstacle as she found herself homeless. She left Tacoma and spent the first 3 months of 2012 in Seattle sleeping on the streets, bus-stations, the airport, and shelters. This calamity on strengthened her artistic dream. Her and her wife, with the help of friends, scraped up enough money for a one-way ticket to New York City. For the first week in New York City, Nena and her wife lived in LaGuardia
airport. They spent their time filling out job applications. Finally they both landed jobs at the McDonalds in the Corona section of Queens.
Like all starving artists, the two of them saved every penny they earned and put it towards a studio in Brooklyn where Kapone recorded her second official mixtape, “Overtime”.

The buzz from Overtime was good enough to score her a meeting with Def Jam A&R Lenny Santiago. However the two could not come to terms and no deal was struck. This only grew Nena Kapone’s hunger. She returned with her wife to her hometown of
Tacoma and began to build her career locally. Since then she has signed major Tacoma, WA artists Motamouth Jones and Abom as well as talented new artists Justin Sayne, N8V, and the Head Choppa to Sumtin Different Entertainment. Kapone also recently dropped a new single titled, “DatNena” which was received so well that it even traveled across the Atlantic and she now has a following in London. Look for her new album with her wife titled “Out the Box” to drop later this year. Nena also plans to go on a tour starting April 20th where she will hit Colorado, Georgia, New York, Canada, and many other stops. Nena Kapone is an exciting, intense, fierce, sharp, diverse, lyrical monster. She has a unique style and her label has turned into a local movement. Nena has die-hard fans who
support her wholeheartedly. She is a special blend of street, of woman, and of Klown. Get to know Nena Kapone’s music and her label. There is nothing else like it
